There is a place for you.
You don't need to be an engineer. Right now, one honest build report with photos and measurements is worth more than any line of code, because every number on this site is still a model estimate. Pick a role below. Each one lists tasks that are open today.
Most valuable right now
The first physical build, with measurements.
Start with the Solo Starter, complete the commissioning checklist, and post what worked and what didn't.
Builders
Hands-on, careful, patient. Basic electronics.
- Build the Solo Starter and post a build reporthard
- Run the 5-step commissioning checklist and report the resultsmedium
- Measure body-to-water heat transfer through a typical topper (heated dummy pad at 34 °C)medium
- Measure cold-plate thermal resistance per Peltier with real clampingmedium
- Measure heatsink resistance vs. fan noise (target ≤ 30 dB(A)); replaces the kit heatsink ESTIMATE valuesmedium
- Test condensation at 15 °C water and 60 % RHmedium
Parts hunters
Datasheets, distributors, regional sourcing. No coding.
- Verify the 7 unverified and 21 listing-only part examples against datasheetseasy
- Confirm the 12 V supply for two-zone kits (GST120A12 class) in the datasheet (current, IEC inlet, connector)easy
- Find a certified 50 °C normally-closed thermal cutoff, a DC-rated DPDT polarity relay and a leak sensor with a datasheeteasy
Electronics & safety
Power electronics, protection, PCB design, safety review.
Mechanical & textile
TPU welding, fluid couplings, enclosures, CAD.
Firmware
Rust, embassy, RP2350, no_std.
Home Assistant & software
ESPHome, C++, Python, Home Assistant automations.
Researchers
Thermal measurement, signal processing, sleep science.
Writers & translators
Clear English, or a translation into your language.
First steps
Run it in two minutes, no hardware needed.
Clone the repository and run the tests. The reference model, the safety logic and the kit checks run in Python; the firmware core runs on your computer against the same golden vectors.
git clone https://github.com/moinsen-dev/open-bed-climate
cd open-bed-climate/software/opod && uv run pytest -q
cd ../../firmware && cargo testGround rules
Four rules we keep.
- Clean-room. Public information only. No vendor firmware, decompiled code, leaked documents or rooting instructions.
- Safety limits are special. A change to a safety limit needs its own issue and a review by two maintainers.
- Claims need evidence. A number on a kit or a part needs a datasheet, a measurement or a model run behind it.
- Parts by role, not by brand. Every role keeps several examples; no part is the only option.
Issue templates
Structured, so enthusiasm turns into data.
Build report
You built (part of) an Open Bed Climate system. Share what worked, what didn't, and your measurements.
Part substitution / new part
Suggest a part that fulfils a role in hardware/parts.toml (cheaper, better, available in your region).
Safety concern
Something in the design, docs or code could hurt someone or damage property.
Questions go to GitHub Discussions, not issues.
