What a bed climate system does.
Commercial bed-cooling systems showed what a smart mattress cover can do. Open Bed Climate covers the same kinds of capabilities with open hardware and local software, and says plainly which ones are designed, which are planned and which we leave to other products.

| Capability | Our approach | Module | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-side heating and cooling | Peltier (TEC) thermal module per zone. Setpoint 13–43 °C; the reachable range depends on the kit. | Thermal | Designed |
| Two independent zones, or one |
| Kit config | Designed |
| Cooling power per side | 4 standard TEC modules per zone in Duo kits. Capping each at 4.5 A costs 0.4 K of cooling and saves 44 % power, so each zone runs from one certified 280 W plug-in supply. | Thermal, Power | Designed |
| Compact hub with reservoir and fast priming | Small reservoir with level sensor and a pump-only prime cycle ( | Thermal | Designed |
| One connector for water and data | Dry-break water couplings plus one low-voltage data cable, bundled in a sleeve. A truly single connector is a nice-to-have. | Water mat | Planned |
| Night temperature schedule | User-owned schedule curves with a wake ramp, run on the hub itself with no subscription | Software | DesignedbasicPlannedadaptive |
| Thermal wake-up | Warm ramp before the wake time | Software | Designed |
| Vibration alarm | Vibration motor puck under the pillow/cover with a haptic driver | Add-on | Planned |
| In-bed sensing | Three interchangeable options: load cells under the bed legs, pneumatic air tube + pressure sensor, or a piezo grid (a 3×3 layout). | Sensing | Planned |
| Presence and in-bed detection | Any of the sensing options; also starts the schedule | Sensing | Planned |
| Heart rate, HRV, breathing (planned, not medical) | BCG signal processing on the hub (not a medical device) | Sensing, Software | Planned |
| Sleep stages | Derived from HR/HRV/breathing/movement; open algorithms only | Software | Planned |
| Tap gestures | Piezo-grid option can detect taps; other options can use a bedside button | Sensing | Planned |
| Away, nap and hot-flash presets | Schedule presets and manual overrides | Software | Planned |
| App and Home Assistant control | Local web UI plus Home Assistant (MQTT discovery or ESPHome) | Software | Planned |
| Cloud account | Not needed: local-only by design | None | Out of scope (by design)on purpose |
| Adjustable base | Use an existing adjustable base with community Home Assistant integrations; anti-snore triggers it from detected snoring/movement | Third-party + Software | Via other products |
| Speaker | Any Home Assistant media player | Third-party | Via other products |
| Blanket | Second water mat on the same thermal module, with a valve or its own zone | Water mat | Planned |
| Pillow cover | Small water mat on its own low-power zone | Water mat | Planned |
| Updates | Hub software and firmware updates you run yourself | Software | Planned |
Where Open Bed Climate deliberately goes further
Local-first and private
No cloud, and biometric data never leaves your home unless you export it.
Repairable and adaptable
Standard parts, documented roles and kit files you can change.
Measurable claims
Each kit's performance claims are checked against the thermal model in CI.
Capabilities are collected from public sources only (product pages, launch coverage, open-source client projects). Table rendered from docs/FEATURES.md with generic capability names.
