Design phase: no unit has been built or measured yet. Help build the first one

Sponsor

Help us turn a tested design into a measured one.

The design, the control software and the firmware exist and are tested in simulation. What's missing is hardware on a real bed. Open Bed Climate is built in public by volunteers: your money buys parts, test gear and a safety review, not marketing. All results are published under open licenses.

What support unlocks

Five concrete things, in this order.

Rough planning numbers, not quotes. Progress is updated by hand as money arrives and is spent.

  1. 01

    Parts for prototype 0

A Solo Starter first, then a Duo Standard. Replaces model estimates with measurements.

    €2,500–3,5000 %funded: 0 %
  2. 02

A medical cooling pad for the v0 mat

Measures body-to-water heat transfer early, before a custom mat exists (decision D4). Includes TPU weld samples for the custom mat.

    €500–1,5000 %funded: 0 %
  3. 03

Instruments for the five prototype-0 measurements

Thermocouple logger, flow meter, DC clamp meter, sound level meter, entry thermal camera. Makes build reports comparable.

    €1,500–2,5000 %funded: 0 %
  4. 04

A first run of the Tier 1 power board and cover sensor board

Tier 1 can't exist without it. 2–3 revisions.

    €600–1,5000 %funded: 0 %
  5. 05

A qualified electrical review of the safety concept

An independent review of SAFETY.md and the electrical design, plus a pre-compliance day for the Tier 1 power module. Evidence, not a certification.

    €2,000–5,0000 %funded: 0 %

Order of magnitude: a full Duo Reference build is roughly €1,000 in parts (BOM v0.1, rough, not a quote).

Independence

What sponsorship can't buy

  • No data. Open Bed Climate has no cloud and collects nothing. There is no user data to share, now or later.
  • No say over safety limits. The limits in the safety concept change only through the public safety process.
  • No exclusivity in the parts catalog. Parts are listed by role. A sponsor's part is one option, never the only one.
  • No ads, tracking or telemetry in firmware, hub, app or docs.
  • No licence changes. Everything stays Apache-2.0 / CERN-OHL-S-2.0.
  • No roadmap control. Sponsors can tell us what they need; maintainers and contributors decide in public.

Ways to give

Money, parts, or a build.

Money

For now by e-mail: business@moinsen.dev. Channels such as GitHub Sponsors, or Open Collective with a public ledger, may come later.

Parts and services

Peltier modules, cold plates, pumps, dry-break couplings, TPU mat fabrication, PCB fabrication and assembly, lab time, or space at a maker space. Write to business@moinsen.dev.

Build one

Free, and the most valuable thing of all: build a kit and send a report with measurements.

Start a build report

Tiers · proposed

Few and boring, on purpose.

Proposed tiers. Until a sponsorship channel exists, we arrange them by e-mail. No perks that need maintainer time beyond writing credits.

Individuals

Supporter

€5 / month

Name on the sponsors page (opt-in), sponsor badge.

Builder

€20 / month

The above, plus your name in the release notes of each hardware revision.

Test bench

€50 / month or €500 once

The above, plus a vote in the quarterly "what do we measure next" poll (advisory).

Organisations

Parts partner

in kind

PCBs, components or samples. Your logo in a "built with parts from" row, a credit in the build log where the part was used, and an honest test write-up, good or bad.

Community sponsor

€250 / month

A small logo on this page and in the README.

Lab sponsor

€1,000 / month or a funded line item

A larger logo and a "funded by" note on the result you funded, such as a measurement report or a board revision.

Grant or foundation

per agreement

Acknowledgement as the funder requires.

Sponsors and funders

Credits

No sponsors yet. Yours could be the first name here. Sponsors are listed by name (opt-in), here and in the repository.

Transparency: once money comes in, a quarterly "money in / money out" post goes into the build log.

FAQ

Questions

Is this tax-deductible?

Not from an individual maintainer. Maybe later via a fiscal host such as Open Collective; ask us.

Can I buy a kit?

Not yet. Selling hardware that combines water, mains-powered supplies and a sleeping person needs a legal entity, CE conformity and product-safety work that a design-phase project can't honestly offer. Build one yourself, with the safety concept.

Can my company sponsor a specific feature?

Yes as funding, no as control. See what sponsorship can't buy.

Where does the money go?

Into the line items above. Every purchase over €100 gets a receipt or photo in the build log.
