Install

Install the firmware. No toolchain needed.

Two boards, two files: the hub (ESP32-S3, ESPHome) installs from this page over USB, and the control board (Pico 2) takes a file by drag and drop. Both are built from the repository by CI for every release.

Release v0.1.1 · checksums in SHA256SUMS

Not yet run on real hardware. The firmware passes its tests and builds, but nobody has run it on a finished build yet. Bring the boards up on the bench first, in the order in the wiring guide, with the TEC supplies unplugged.

1 · Hub

ESP32-S3 hub: install from the browser

  1. Plug the ESP32-S3 into this computer with a data USB cable. On a DevKitC-1 use the port labelled USB (not UART): Wi-Fi setup after the install talks over that port.
  2. Click Install, pick the board's serial port and confirm. Erase the device on the first install.
  3. When it's done, enter your Wi-Fi in the same dialog. No Wi-Fi setup here? The hub opens a hotspot named open-bed-climate-xxxxxx; join it and pick your network.
  4. Home Assistant finds the hub on its own (ESPHome integration). To change the configuration later, adopt it in the ESPHome Device Builder: Home Assistant then sets its own encryption key.

This browser can't talk to USB serial devices. Use Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer (Web Serial). Firefox and Safari don't support it.

Installing needs a secure (HTTPS) page.

Needs Chrome or Edge on a desktop computer (Web Serial). The board isn't listed? Install the USB driver for its serial chip, or hold BOOT while plugging it in. Manual install: esptool.py write_flash 0x0 opod-hub-factory.bin. SHA-256 0497f428fdf000d6b49d3143a87c2de52240c59a2c224dab350cd3ee9d09a412

2 · Control board

Pico 2 control board: drag and drop

Use the file for your kit. The kit sets the zones and the TEC current limit. Another kit's file can run your Peltiers above what your parts are sized for.

KitZonesTECs per zoneCurrent limitFirmware
Solo Starter135.0 A per TECopod-pico2-solo-starter.uf2
Duo Standard244.5 A per TECopod-pico2-duo-standard.uf2
Duo Reference245.0 A per TECopod-pico2-duo-reference.uf2
  1. Unplug the Pico 2. Hold its BOOTSEL button and plug it into the computer, then let go.
  2. A drive named RP2350 appears. Drag your kit's .uf2 file onto it.
  3. The drive disappears and the board restarts with the new firmware. Its outputs stay off until the hub asks for a temperature and every safety check passes.

Works in any browser and on any OS. Your own kit file? Build with cargo build --release --no-default-features --features kit-…, see firmware/.
